Inventory of Urban Health Related Data covering the Greater Toronto Area - Supporting Documentation

Description of Air Pollutant Data, Available through the Ministry of the Environment

The Ministry of the Environment collects and holds air quality data monitored through the provincial air monitoring network.  Hourly readings of the MOE’s six criteria pollutants are taken from ambient air monitoring sites.  The ministry’s air quality database has records dating back to the early 1950s. Approximately 4 million continuous air pollution measurements from ambient sites are loaded into their corporate database each year.

The Ministry’s six criteria pollutants, for which readings are recorded, are:

  • Sulphur dioxide
  • Ozone
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Total reduced sulphur compounds
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Fine particulate matter.

The four ambient air monitoring sites located in Toronto are:

  • Toronto Downtown – Bay/Wellesley
  • Toronto East – Kennedy/Lawrence
  • Toronto North – Yonge St./Finch Ave.
  • Toronto West – 125 Resources Rd.

There are no specific restrictions on who may access the data; data requests are addressed on a case by case basis.  Contact the Coordinator, Ms. Melynda Bitzos, to discuss your data needs with respect to the Ministry’s holdings.  She will also direct you in making a data request. The turnaround time between making a request and receiving data depends both on the nature of the request and on how busy the ministry is at the time. Note, if this data is to be used by the private sector there is a fee for accessing the data.
