Building Partnerships, Building Strength

The Centre for Urban Health Initiatives (CUHI) understands that research in population and public health is not a solitary endeavour. That’s why we’re committed to providing opportunities for communication, collaboration and meaningful interaction among a diverse collection of individuals committed to urban health.

CUHI provides venues for interaction, networking and partnership building for government decisionmakers, community service providers and researchers. It also provides ongoing outreach and collaboration by CUHI staff and associates.

Through its Community Based Research Award of Merit, seed grants, community intern positions, policy forums and supportive networking, CUHI builds capacity for collaboration and fosters vital partnerships.

Centre for the Environment
The Centre brings together three former entities: the Institute for Environmental Studies, the Division of the Environment and the Innis College Environmental Studies Program.  Building on the interdisciplinary strengths of these units, we hope that the Centre as a whole will consist of even more than the sum of its parts.  A major academic goal will be to serve as a doorway to environmental research and teaching across the disciplines.  While offering its own programs, the Centre will also serve a consultative function, directing students, where appropriate, to other counselors in units offering related environmental courses and programs across the university.

Cities Centre
Cities Centre, the University of Toronto's newest initiative in urban research, is a multi-disciplinary research institute (established in February 2007) incorporating the Centre for Urban and Community Studies (CUCS).  The mandate of the Centre is broad:  to encourage and facilitate research, both scholarly and applied, on cities and on a wide range of urban policy issues, both in Canada and abroad, and to provide a gateway for communication between the University and the broader urban community. The Centre’s activities contribute to scholarship on questions relating to the social, economic and physical well-being of people who live and work in urban areas large and small, in Canada and around the world.

Sherbourne Health Centre
Sherbourne Health Centre serves the diverse communities of downtown Toronto, providing innovative family health care, counselling, and health education in collaboration with others. It also offers specialized services for people who are homeless, and unique programs for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities. As a learning organization, Sherbourne hosts placements for student health practitioners from a variety of disciplines.

St. Michael’s Inner City Health Research Unit
St. Michael's Hospital's Inner City Health Research Unit was established in 1998. The focus of the unit's work is to improve access to and delivery of health services, especially primary health care to poor and vulnerable populations. Specific areas of interest include: HIV/AIDS; homelessness; mental health; ambulatory care; socioeconomic status and other issues related to inner city populations. St. Michael's Hospital's Research Unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Our goal is to be known both locally, nationally, and internationally for our research endeavors.

University College, University of Toronto
Since its establishment in the 1850's, University College has been committed to the non-sectarian, socially inclusive education of undergraduate students at the University of Toronto. The College's reputations for high academic standards and sustained community engagement continue to inspire our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. The College offers six interdisciplinary academic programs, including Health Studies, which offers a minor, major and specialist.

Wellesley Institute
The Wellesley Institute is a Toronto-based non-profit and non-partisan research and policy institute. Their focus is on developing research and community-based policy solutions to the problems of urban health and health disparities.
